Every night after the music lessons have ended with the call for dinner, I open up the Sparrow Guest House from 6 to 8pm for any kids who want to come over to read, chat, drink hot chocolate, or just get out of the house for a bit. Every night is completely different - I never know who will show up and what we'll end up talking about or doing.
My favorite example thus far: pulling out the Twister board game with a few 15 year-old girls who kept whining that they were bored. It was hysterical. We laughed more than we ever have together.
While some nights have provided amazing Bible studies and the deep theological questioning of the teenage mind (ie. "Why can't we see Heaven? Where is Hell, since Earth has so many layers?"), other days we simply spend time together: watching Generations - the classic South African soap opera, listening to music or watching a movie, reading out loud to each other, doing homework. We're slowly, slowly building relationships and trust - a very precious and difficult thing to establish amongst kids who've faced abandonment most of their lives. Please continue to pray for open doors as I strive to walk in faith alongside these young hearts.
