A girl in the Teenage Cluster turned to me a few weeks ago and asked how she could "get skinny". A discussion of proper nutrition, rates of metabolism, and other factors went right over her head, so the answer became simple. We're going to start exercising together.
While the boys at Sparrow are constantly running about playing soccer, both Sparrow Village and the school system have hardly any structures in place to get girls exercising. I started with this one teenage girl and we now have a small following of girls who come out twice a week to go for a run in the stadium next to Sparrow.
The girls are often barefoot, none of them have proper sports clothes (including a sportsbra), and it can take them over 20 minutes to run 4 laps, but it's something! We spend a lot of time stretching and walking and talking, and we run at a beautiful time of day after the heat of the day fades and the sun is starting to set.
Quality time with the girls + healthy living = a good thing.
A relaxing "full body stretch" post-run.
